Why do you often get high bounce rates from purchased email lists?

Sending an email broadcast to a list of purchased email addresses seems easy enough. You type a message, enter the list of purchased email addresses, and hit send. Boom!

But then the bounces start to overwhelm your inbox. What just happened?

Purchased email addresses are really just “best guesses”. List compilers use all types of sources to match email addresses to mailing addresses and, with any luck, to a person who actually lives at that mailing address.

A healthy hard-bounce rate for an email broadcast sent to a permission-based email list is less than 2%. However, bounce rates can exceed 50% when you use an appended list.

Precinct’s email append partner for nursing, therapy and other healthcare professionals’ email addresses minimizes the number of email bounces you receive by using a three-step verification method. These steps are performed IMMEDIATELY PRIOR to the list being sent to us.

First, they ping the domain email service to confirm that the email address is valid.

Second, they bump the append list against a national suppression list. This list is maintained by a third-party and is used by most large list providers and mailers.

Finally, they bump the append list against their internal suppression list.

Even with these quality control steps in place, it’s not uncommon to experience a 10-15% bounce rate. Remember, the append process is largely guesswork.

We’ll refund any hard bounces provided you can supply us with the email addresses that bounced along with the domains’ bounce report or response message for each hard-bounce email no less than 30 days from receipt of the list.
